This week, Senator John Kerry announced that he will not seek the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2008. This is good news for everyone involved, including the Senator himself. Personally, I thought it was refreshing to see a proud, ambitious man thoughtfully reflect on the campaign ahead and come to terms that 2008 will not be his year. Senator Kerry’s wisdom was evident throughout the process.
The news is good for the rest of us because Senator Kerry has a history of being a spectacular Senator. Now, free from the chains of Presidential ambition, he can return to building a legacy of achievement in the United States Senate, a journey he began more than 22 years ago. We need his passion for foreign policy, his long history of environmental activism and his commitment to human rights.
Remember, Senator Kerry is the war hero who had the courage, along with Senator Robb and Senator Kerrey, to lead the fight against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. This is the man who cast one of only 14 votes against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Along with former Vice President and Senator Al Gore, he has been one of the most distinguished defenders of the environment to serve in Congress. Intellectually, he stands out among his peers because he understands the nuances of sound public policy. The level of debate will certainly rise with his constant presence on the floor of the Senate.
Senator Kerry, now that he can focus on his Senate duties, has the potential at his young age to become one of the most renowned Senate leaders of his generation. It was a tough decision for a determined man, but all of us are winners because of it. Welcome back, Senator. We have missed you.
