A new Zogby Poll of Iowa voters released on March 27 continues to show John Edwards leading his Democratic competitors. However, it also shows a tightening three person race. The poll was taken after Governor Vilsack endorsed Senator Clinton and the situation concerning Elizabeth Edward’s health.
Edwards leads by 13 percent over the other candidates among voters who call themselves progressives, which indicates his continued strong support among those who oppose the war in Iraq. Nearly 75 percent of those polled said that they wanted to support a candidate who stands by his or her belief system even if voters don’t think they can win the general election. Clearly, a candidate’s character and commitment to principle are major factors in this election. The Iraq War appears to have made people wary of cautious politicians in a time of crisis.
Obama holds a lead among likely caucus goers who are independents. Clinton is favored among voters who are 70 or older, while Edwards wins those voters who are between 35 to 54 years of age.
Here are the results of the new Zogby Poll, which was compiled from 506 interviews conducted on March 26 with likely Democratic Party caucus attendees. There is an error rate of +/- 4.5 percent.
John Edwards: 27%
Hillary Clinton: 25%
Barack Obama: 23%
Joseph Biden: 3%
Bill Richardson: 3%
Dennis Kucinich: 1%
