20051216_msp_grad Our readers overwhelmingly believe that the Republican Party will pick Mitt Romney as their nominee. Romney leads second place Rudy Giuliani by more than 25 percent! It is interesting that just six months ago, the likely choice would have been Senator John McCain. The Arizona Senator pulled just 3.8 percent in this poll for fifth place.

The poll illustrates how quickly things can change in American politics. We have five months to go before the first voting in Iowa, so be prepared for anything!

It appears that the Iowa straw poll in Ames has had the desired effect for Governor Huckabee of Arkansas. He placed ahead of McCain for fourth place with just 5.1 percent. His competitor for conservative support, Senator Brownback, received no votes. I still marvel that Huckabee comes from Hope, Arkansas just like former President Clinton. What is in the water down there?

Clearly our readers poll mostly includes progressives, though not exclusively. So, this is an interesting snapshot of how progressives feel the Republican nomination will end.
