Last week’s readers poll confounds conventional wisdom. More than 72 percent said they would drop the candidate they are currently supporting and back former Vice President Al Gore if he were to enter the race for president.
While this lack of commitment would not be surprising among the Republicans given the current political environment, it is surprising to see such deep dissatisfaction among Democrats. However, it’s possible that these results have more to do with enthusiasm for Gore than disappointment in the current cast of Democratic candidates.
Regardless, Gore’s reincarnation since his heartbreaking loss to George Bush in 2000 is astounding. Rarely do public figures who have experienced such a profound setback as Gore get a second chance. While I continue to enthusiastically support John Edwards for President, I think Gore would have a real shot at the top job if he chooses to run.
Would you drop your support for your current presidential choice if Al Gore enters the race?
Yes: 72.4%
