510109r63 Senator Ted Kennedy is my personal hero. As a friend, I have witnessed Kennedy's amazing humor and his gift for great stories. He treats friends personally with the same kindness that he treats our planet. He is a giant among leaders, being respected and admired around the world. Without a doubt, the Senator is one of the greatest Senators of the last century, if not in our nation's history.

When Senator Kennedy speaks with his heartfelt passion and strength, Americans listen. People care what he has to say and how he views the world. So it was no surprise that all eyes were watching as the great Senator endorsed Senator Obama for the President of the United States. Leaders and everyday Americans gathered around their television sets to witness, the Senator and to see if Obama could rise to the occasion.

We were not disappointed.

For those of us, who went into politics because of President Kennedy's call to make the world a better place, the rally at American University brought tears and chills. It was a reminder that it’s not too late to create a universe of love, compassion and caring. With the ugliness spewed from the Bush Administration, to hear a call to greatness from Kennedy and Obama was uplifting and empowering.

Never in all my years of American politics have I seen an endorsement that was so clearly a 'torch being passed to a new generation." Politicians over the years, through pictures and actual endorsements, have attempted to portray themselves as torchbearer of President Kennedy’s legacy. Yesterday the Kennedy family bestowed the honor on Barack Obama. To watch a graceful Carolina Kennedy make her first Presidential endorsement in 28 years and compare the young Senator to her father was the ultimate blessing.

Already there are those who would diminish the power of Senator Kennedy's and Caroline Kennedy's endorsement but they would be making a serious mistake. The Kennedy legacy has a powerful attraction to many of us who were called into service by President Kennedy. When Senator Kennedy speaks, people listen, because he has for so many years been a committed voice for those who have gone unheard.
