For those who believe that population control is essential in solving the world's problems (which I do), one of the key tools to achieving such a goal would be to increase taxes on those families who decide to conceive more than two children. In addition, population control advocates would give tax incentives for each adopted child.
However, by a significant majority (57%) our readers want no part of such a program. But encouragingly a large minority (43%) would be supportive of such a program. One of the most important and least discussed issues in any campaign is the way to control population and thus affect all other issues from world hunger to climate change. Some nations like China have a 'one child' policy that is rigidly enforced - a dictate leading to all sorts of problems.
The purpose of a 'tax penalty' would be to limit population growth without the massive governmental interference and authoritarian ways of the Chinese government. By giving incentives for adoption, then people could have the large families they desire without damaging the world by unchecked population growth. In addition, people could have as many children as the want but they must except responsibility for the impact on the world.
Of course, any discussion of population control runs right smack into those religious authoritarians who want nothing of family planning.
Should the Government Penalize Families That Conceive More Than Two Children by Increasing Their Taxes?
