Without a doubt, one of the most emotional moments at the 1992 Democratic Convention was when Bob Hattoy spoke about his personal struggle with HIV/AIDS and the battle against it nationally. The Convention Hall fell silent as he declared he personally had AIDS. Hattoy was a major figure in the National Democratic Party and a strong environmentalist. Many in the Convention crowd did not know his status. It was the first time an HIV positive person had spoken to a national convention. For the nation, it was a convention moment that many will never forget. I know I won't. After a long and hard-fought battle, Hattoy passed away of AIDS last year.
