Last week we pointed out Senator John McCain's execrable record on LGBT issues. He is wrong on each and every point, and seems to be entrenching himself into an aggressively anti-LGBT stance. Today we look at Senator Barack Obama's positions on these important matters.
With the exception of marriage equality, Obama is perfect on all of our issues. He still has a way to go to embrace full marriage equality, but like all the other major candidates running this year the Illinois senator is not quite there yet. On the other hand, he supports full civil unions and equal benefits, protections and rights for LGBT couples. It's an important step forward but frankly not good enough to give him a full 100% grading.
That being said, he is the first Presidential candidate to across the board oppose the initiatives and referendums on state ballots that would put the marriage equality issue in State Constitutions. He strongly opposes Proposition 8 in California and Amendment 2 in Florida. McCain supports both of those efforts and supported the one in his own home state of Arizona that even the voters rejected in 2004.
