For years, New York has had two United States Senators that do not support marriage equality. Even with Governor David Paterson pushing for it strongly, neither Chuck Senator Schumer nor Senator Hillary Clinton has endorsed this crucial civil rights issue. With one of the largest populations of LGBT people in America, it has been a sad and disappointing state of affairs for the Empire State. However, this could change if Caroline Kennedy is appointed to fill Senator Clinton's soon-to-be vacant seat.

In a written interview with Politico.com, Ms. Kennedy supported marriage equality for all LGBT citizens - Barack+Obama+Campaigns+Ahead+Super+Tuesday+DtVT9JB_BM1l not civil unions, but full marriage equality. Along with other progressive views including being totally pro-choice and pro-gun control, she continues to impress as a person who could be a dynamic, substantive and powerful woman sitting in the United States Senate. New Yorkers would have at least one senator who would no longer be afraid to support our epic civil rights struggle.

Alan van Capelle, the tough and effective leader of Empire State Pride Agenda (ESPA) was quoted as saying in Politico.com:

I am pleased to hear that Caroline Kennedy through a spokesman expressed support for marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. In the coming weeks I look forward to hearing in her own voice how she will work to advance equality of [lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered] people," said the executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, Alan Van Capelle, who contrasted Kennedy's views to those of Senator Chuck Schumer who, like Senator Hillary Clinton and unlike most of the state's other elected officials, opposes same-sex marriage.

"If [Kennedy is] selected, at least half of New York's representation in the United States Senate will finally support equal marriage rights for same sex couples," he said.

Members of the LGBT community should make their views known to the Governor of our support for her appointment to the United States Senate and to Senator Schumer that if Caroline can do it, so can he! That would be one of the joys of having her in the Senate. Her example and advocacy just might prod others to live their consciences and principles.
