-Don't you love the story in The Washington Post on J. Edgar "Mary" Hoover attempting to prove that former President Johnson staffer Jack Valenti was gay. Seems that in the 1960's, Valenti had the nerve to invite a closeted gay photographer to one of his parties in Texas. First of all, bravo to Jack Valenti for being so progressive so early in the 1960's. Just to have a gay guest made you gay in the closeted Hoover's mind. Wonder what that would make Clyde Tolson who was Hoover's 'long-time companion'? Someone just has to write a hysterical musical on the Hoover and Tolson relationship! The first song could be Tolson singing to Hoover, "Is that my G-Man in a G-String?"
-My God was the Academy Awards bad last night with the exception of Sean Penn and Dustin Lance Black who were magnificent. All through the awards I was waiting for someone to turn on the lights in the damn hall. There was no energy and half the time I had no idea what was happening and why.
-Senator Patti Murray (D-Washington) seems to be in great shape as the battle for Congress continues in 2010. The new poll for Daily Kos done by Research 2000 shows the incumbent leading various potential opponents anywhere from 13% to 15%. Republicans should look elsewhere to put their resources.
-In the 'bad taste award of the year" department, Taegan Goodard's Political Wire has an item about Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) proclaiming that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be dead within nine month.
-Another great story in The Washington Post, this one about the impact that the movie "Milk" has had on LGBT activism among the young. The Post article written by Hank Stuever makes you wonder what impact on Proposition 8 the movie would have had if it had been released before the election. Robin Tyler has a wonderful quote in the article:
"Suddenly there were all these young kids," Tyler says. "I call them the 'new' generation, and I'm in the Milk generation. They see this movie, with all this history they just didn't know about -- young people taking to the streets, getting involved. They thought no one had been on the streets before. I said, 'No, no, no -- we've been here waiting for you. Welcome to the movement.' " She describes this turn of events like a beaming grandmother, and is now focused on a March 5 state Supreme Court hearing that could overturn Prop 8 -- something a "Milk" Oscar or two could draw attention to.
-New York Governor David Paterson now acknowledges that he asked his staff to make sure that people knew Caroline Kennedy was not his first choice to fill Hillary Clinton's vacated senate seat and expresses 'shock' that it got out of hand. Seems to me if that is the case, a public apology is in order not only to Caroline Kennedy but also to those who strongly supported her.
-The details on Obama's massive high speed rail expansion in the stimulus package can be found in article by David Rogers on Politico.com. Soon we will all be buzzing around in high speed trains and no more four hour waits at airports!
-Brava to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for bringing up climate change in China. If you have been to China recently you know it is one of the most polluted countries on the planet. The beautiful rivers are filled with sewage, the birds have literally disappeared from the sky and it is like smoking two packs of cigarettes a day just to breath the air in Beijing.
-Socks, the Clinton White House cat has died this week at the age of 20. My cats, Sheeba, Uganda and Kansas, have declared a thirty day period of mourning among the nation's cats. "Memory" will be sung.
-President Obama might be talking like President Lincoln but he sure is acting like President Roosevelt. In my opinion, both good role models.
-The right wing blogs have made a big deal of all the reporters leaving their jobs and going to work for President Obama. Sadly, if I worked in the print media these days, I would be looking for a new job too.
-American-born Queen Noor of Jordan has found love at last. Seems she was able to fall in love with the second richest man in the world. Carlos Slim, the 69 year old Mexican billionaire, has been escorting the Queen for the last year. They have had to use private jets to fly around the world in order to keep their relationship private. Poor babies, I know how they feel.
-Now here is a good one from the Los Angeles Times: South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is thinking of turning down all the stimulus money for his state because he is concerned for the national debt. Funny, the man never said one word as President Bush was running up the highest debt in the history of the nation. Meaning while, close to 10% of the workers in his state are unemployed. Wonder if he is thinking about running for President more than he is getting jobs, food and schools for his own citizens. What a piece of work South Carolina has as Governor.
-Lost in the 'night of the Oscar's" was President and First Lady Obama's first formal dinner for the nation's governors. The First Lady introduced a new hair style and looked stunning.
