Senator Roland Burris (D-Illinois) should give his constituents desperately needed relief from scandal after scandal and tender his resignation immediately.
Over the last couple of days it has become apparent that he made a deal with the impeached sleaze ball governor Rod Blagoyevich to be appointed to the United States Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama. The entire situation has been disgusting and filled with backroom politics at its worst. We would have been better off if the U.S. Senate had trusted Majority Leader Harry Reid's initial instincts and not seated Burris in the first place.
Now, clearly the senator committed perjury before the Illinois legislature during the governor's impeachment trial and has lied to the people of that great state. Going from "never did any discussion take place about quid pro quo with the governor for the appointment," to his brother taking to them about raising money but raising none and now Burris is saying they attempted to raise money but failed to do so. Three versions in about as many days.
There is no question but that we would be treated to more versions but the senator has decided that his perjury wasn't the problem - it was the media. Since this proclamation, Burris has refused to answer any more questions about the situation. My guess is that he has cut off contact because he can't even keep track of his own lies.
Illinois has been placed under a huge cloud of one scandal after another. The people have a right to be totally outraged at this latest development. Newly sworn-in Governor Quinn should reform the state, clean house and give hope to an end of this chain of indictments and impeachment. If Burris refuses to go then the United States Senate should consider eviction.
