For decades, the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands has been a beacon of sanity in a very crazy world. The small populated nation has led the way in progressive legislation, education, human rights and an enlightened foreign policy. More than any other country, it had built a reputation as a place of tolerance and "live and let live". Now all that is beginning to be questioned and real concerns are emerging that the populace is shifting seriously to the right.
Recent polls by Maurice de Hond have shown the extreme right wing "Party for Freedom (PvdV)" has gained dramatically in the polls. Now there is no question but that the more progressive opposition parties most likely still will be able to create a government but a win by the PvdV would set an entire different tone and image for the Netherlands. The leader of the party is Geert Wilders (photograph) who has campaigned hard and heavy against the Muslim population of the country. Wilders is best known internationally for his outrageous anti-Muslim film where he compares the Koran to Hitler's "Mein Kampf."
The Dutch have been struggling with the issue of immigration and assimilation since the emergence of popular populist/right and openly gay Pim Fortuyn in the early part of this decade. Just weeks before the election, Fortuyn was assassinated and his party was unable to survive as a major force. The killing of Dutch painter Theo van Gogh by an immigrant fueled the anti-Muslim passions in the nation. Now Geert Wilders, a devout Catholic, is carrying the banner. In an article in "The Guardian", he calls for an end to mosque building, halting all Muslim immigration, banning head scarves, paying existing Muslims in the Netherlands to leave and other repressive measures.
All of this has led to a dramatic increase in the polls for his right wing party. In the last Maurice de Hond poll, Wilder's party is in the lead with a prospective 27 seats in the next legislative elections. Since January, he has increased from 20 possible seats to the current 27 possible seats and has gone into the lead over all other Dutch political parties.
There is no question but that this is a very disturbing trend for one of my favorite
