California's shame grows by the day.
Also those who have lined up and suggested that we pull back from marriage parity, accept a separate but equal proposition of civil unions or 'now is not the time,' kindly move aside because this epic struggle for civil rights is not for the faint of heart. The fact of the matter is, despite major set backs, we are winning. In the words of the old civil rights anthem, "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Us Around."
How ironic that the week that Advocate magazine has on its cover, "Is It Time to Compromise on Marriage Equality?" we have one of our best weeks since the initial Massachusetts victory.
First came the astounding win in the heartland of Iowa. Hello, Iowa! That victory appears to be secure and permanent. Then, in an amazing series of legislative maneuvers, Vermont became the first state to grant full marriage equality through legislative action. The fact we had the votes to override a Republican governor's veto is yet another testament to the amazing determination and organizing skills of the LGBT community. Finally Washington, D.C voted, with no dissenting votes, to recognize all marriages performed in the states where marriage equality has been approved. We can even throw in Sweden which this week legalized marriage equality.
Wow, what a week.
What's next? If these victories don't shut up the nay-sayers then I say push them aside and go for it. We are winning and there is no turning around now. Our next target states must be Maine, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey. The communities in Maine and New Hampshire are well on their way to winning with spectacular organization. And bravo to all.
There is simply no excuse for marriage equality not passing in New York and New Jersey with Democrats in control of both houses and a Democratic governor in each. The time for political excuses is over with these recent victories. New York and New Jersey must pass marriage equality this year. Come on, if Iowa can do it and every state around you can do it, what excuses can these progressive states possibly muster? Every friend, every family member, every LGBT person, every organization that lives in these two states should push governmental officials to the wall until we have full equality.
Even if some of our LGBT elected officials play internal politics in these legislatures, they do not speak for us. We will accept nothing less than full equality this year. Now is the time....not next year...not the following year....but now!
