-David Huebner is to be appointed by President Obama as the first openly gay ambassador of this administration so far. David is a talented man who has been committed to LGBT equality over the years, serving as a member of ANGLE in Los Angeles and also very active in GLAAD. With New Zealand and American Samoa being part of the territory included in his Ambassadorship, he will have his work cut out for him. Bravo to the President and bravo to a very decent and worthy man....David Huebner.
-Governor Jon Corzine, Democrat of New Jersey, has pulled totally even with Republican Chris "I am against gay marriage" Christie. The incumbent governor has battled back from a ten point deficit with his hard stand on the issues and Christie's being all over the map on them!
-For those of you upset that we are keeping the pressure on Obama before he speaks at the HRC Dinner, do you really think he is responding because of a lack of pressure? Also, all of us are thrilled he is going to the dinner and if my health permitted I would be attending. It is not about HRC nor the dinner, it is about what actions is he going to take and when. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
-My dear friend, Donna Sachet, who is one of the most well-known drag queens in the world, was just asked to sing the National Anthem at a Giants baseball game. Now talk about breaking down barriers. Donna is simply an amazing person who has worked endlessly for making the world a better place. We all are so proud of our friend. Take a look:
-Great article by Evan Wolfson on Huffington Post. Wolfson, who is head of Freedom to Marry, wrote a passionate piece using President Clinton's recent conversion on marriage equality as a model for President Obama.
-Another fantastic piece by Wayne Besen and again it is around the HRC Dinner and President Obama. Besen praises that attendance at the dinner but the emphasis is on what the president plans to say to the LGBT community. Everyone is in on the guessing game. Besen says in "Obama's Big Gay Speech":
"Let it be known that the GLBT community is no longer interested in being pals with the powerful or having the famous tell us we are fabulous - unless it leads to action. If the goal of this evening were simply to provide an interesting dinner guest, Meryl Streep or Michael Moore would have sufficed. What we want from Obama, however, is a fighter working to set us free. We need signed paper in the form of laws, not paper-thin promises and illusive signs of hope. Unless a concrete vision is offered at this event, Obama's speech will sink like concrete in the Potomac River.
I would also advise President Obama that it will be considered a letdown if the centerpiece of his talk is to offer a push for hate crime legislation. Americans of all political stripes are generally in agreement that it is wrong to beat or kill gay people, so this is legislation that requires a bare minimum of political capital. There are presently laws on the books that punish perpetrators of such crimes, so some form of redress already exists. (Although, hate crime laws are still important to ensure justice is consistently served)"
-Polls are all over the place these days. If former Republican Governor Tommy Thompson ran against Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), he would beat Feingold by 5% points according to a Wisconsin poll.
-Appears that in Massachusetts, Martha Coakley is running away with a huge lead over her Democratic opponents in the primary to replace the late, great Senator Edward Kennedy in Massachusetts. There is little question that she will be the next senator from Massachusetts.
-Can someone explain to me why Senator John Ensign (R-NV) has not been forced to resign yet? Anyone? With any reason?
-Well, the clueless Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia has managed to attack New York Mayor Bloomberg for his outstanding record on gun control, offend all Italian Americans and every New Yorker. Take a look at this ad: -
