-The time is nearing for Houston voters to go to the polls. City Controller Annise Parker, who is an open lesbian, just received the endorsement of the powerful Houston Post which said:
"In both her public and personal life, Parker has maintained high ethical standards and decorum in her years as an elected official. No scandals have occurred on her watch. As mayor she will present the city’s best face to the world, one of tolerance, diversity and compassion for all our citizens.
The Chronicle urges voters to allow Parker to take her high standards and solid record of accomplishment to the city’s highest."
Because of a virulent anti-gay campaign by her opponent the race is neck and neck. Contribute now through the Victory Fund to help elect this talented woman mayor of Houston.
-Andy Towle (photograph) of Towleroad.com gives a wonderful and revealing interview to the dean of bloggers Rex Wockner. Andy has created one of the most powerful LGBT websites in the world and this interview reveals his personal side.
-Now here is a shocker! Senator Carl Levin (D-Michigan) who had promised early hearing on Don't Ask, Don't Tell in the United States Senate says they have now been postponed 'indefinitely'. Still waiting to hear the outrage from our national organizations who just shortly ago was holding up the hearings as a sign of progress from the Democrats.
-Bravo to the team from the recently defunct Washington Blade which immediately put out a new publication called The DC Agenda. It is a fine product in such a short time and they are wise enough to invest heavily into their web site. News is shifting all over the world from print to the web...like it or not, that is a fact.
-This site's readers have long given President Obama high marks in the davidmixner.com polls over the last two years. So the results last week in the poll were somewhat surprising. With a huge number of folks voting, only 27% of those voting said they would vote for Obama in a 2012 Democratic primary. A full 44% of our readers selected Secretary of State Clinton as their choice. That should be a big warning sign for this President.
-Christopher Landavazo (photograph) has a great column in The Advocate about his desire to enlist in the Navy again after serving with a distinguished record before. Except this time he wants to enlist openly. Read "Called to Serve" and let's thank Christopher for his courage.
-Ben Smith of Politico is covering Sarah Palin's Book Tour. In Grand Rapids, a young man with a home made shirt saying "Homo's for Palin" was told to cover it up or leave. The young man covered it up. He wouldn't give his name which is too bad because clearly he needs help.
-The elections in 2010 are coming front and center now in the political news and it isn't all good for Democrats. Cook Political Report says 83 Democratic seats are potentially competitive; only 27 Republican seats are considered up for grabs. Oh God, here we go again.
-Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post reports that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) took in three million more than the Republican National Committee. However the Dems have $4.5 million in debt and the Republicans have none. Maybe they need some of that Gay Money?
- Is Senator John McCain history? Seems that the former Republican Presidential nominee could be in a race for survival if Congressman J.D. Hayworth challenges him in the Republican Primary in Arizona. The race is neck and neck in the polls. No wonder the moderate is shifting quickly to the right of Gingrich!
-One of my least favorite politicians in the world, a man with no principles, Rudy Giuliani is thinking of challenging Democratic United States Senator Kristen Gillibrand. According to Taegan Goddard's Political Wire, the new Marist Poll shows Giulani leading Gillibrand by 14%. Now that makes me a huge Gillibrand fan right away.
-Our friends at Daily Kos have a new poll that shows Governor Charles ("I am not gay") Crist rapidly losing ground in the Republican primary to right wing challenger Marco Rubio. He only leads Rubio by 10% versus over 40% just a short time ago. Main issue? Believe it not, it is a picture of Crist hugging President Obama!
-Powerful Democrat United States Senator Byron Dorgan could be in serious re-election trouble in North Dakota where he has served for 18 years. If Republican Governor John Hoeven runs, Zogby poll shows Dorgan would lose right now by 19%!
-The trend against Democrats continues in California where Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown is now only tied with Republican Meg ("I supported the passage of Prop 8") Whitman. Brown had been leading comfortably before according to the latest Rasmussen Reports Poll.
-As we look at the poll figures above about the close races for some key Democrats, maybe it is time to remember all that the Republicans have given us. They seem to have a member of Congress for all of our needs. Take a look!
