Where have I been? The new bridge they are building at Hoover Dam came as a complete surprise to me. The $160 million dollar bridge will shorten the ride between Nevada and Arizona. Take a look at these wonderful photographs of the construction.
Gosh, I hate to tell you David, but (as usual) there's a little more to this story than just fabulous photos of a marvelous feat of engineering in a stunning setting. Ostensibly, this bridge was fast-tracked after 911 (when large trucks immediately were prohibited and ever since have had to detour way around Hoover Dam, since the authorities are paranoid of the obvious devastation to the 20 million people who would lose their water supply if dastardly tairiss ever were able to get onto the dam with a nice big bomb). But fact is, go-go shark developers have always resented the bottleneck of slow traffic on US hiway 95 over the dam, since real-estate companies have long salivated over vast areas on the Arizona side. With a zippy new highway, beautiful virgin desert will become yet more ugly Las Vegas sprawl. As soon as the economy picks up, you can bet that moth-balled plans to build huge "master-planned luxury golf-course communities" will be back in our faces. We taxpayers will be subsidizing ticky-tacky development more than just by paying for the bridge (where'd you get the $160 million figure; it's costing much more than that), because as you may have heard local authorities have corollary plans to also spend billions on a huge water pipeline boondoggle. I live here, and I love this desert. So I'm sorry, whereas you see a really neat bridge, I see yet another American virgin, just waiting to be raped. Without a condom.
Hoover Dam and its associated changes in water use had devastating impact on the Colorado River Delta at the mouth of the Colorado River. The construction of the dam has been pointed to as the beginning of an era of decline of this estuarine ecosystem. For six years in the late 1930s, after the construction of the dam and while Lake Mead filled, virtually no flow of water reached the mouth of the river.
I read it thoroughly and i think its a best blog in this world because it has great achievement by the author... Keep it up guys i love to see it at the moment when the people required such type of blog....
