Edwards
According to numerous reports, former Presidential candidate John Edwards is about to be indicted for his hush fund to cover-up his sex scandal. Generally I don't mean anyone any harm but in this case I say throw the book at him. And as you will recall, I was an early and ardent supporter of his last campaign.

No matter how you feel about this sordid affair, you can't ever forgive either Edwards or his wife Elizabeth for one action: Both were willing to put their raw ambition and quest for power over the needs of the country, the party and the poor. There is no question that if Edwards had been the winner in Iowa he could have been well on his way to the nomination. Can you imagine what would have happened if this all had surfaced in a general election?

Having just finished both Game Change on the 2010 campaign and also The Politician by Edwards aide and close friend Andrew Young, my jaw is still dropped to the floor with the revelations about Edwards behavior, conduct, dishonesty and rampant narcissism. Well before the official announcement of his candidacy, with his wife suffering from a recurrence of her breast cancer, Edwards had begun an affair with Rielle Hunter (photograph with Edwards) and fashioned an elaborate cover-up including extremely questionable use of funds, hidden funds and hush money. These funds were directly raised in relationship to the campaign in order to keep the entire vile mess hidden from the public,.

Not only did he have an affair, he fathered an out of wedlock child and made a porno sex tape in the middle of a campaign! You would be hard pressed to read either of these two books and have any generous feelings left for either Elizabeth or John Edwards. The real question after reading the books is how in the hell did he get so far with so little known to those of us supporting him? What obligation did his campaign have to disclose this and remove him from contention? Is there loyalty to him personally or to the country? Going quietly into the night and disassociating yourself from him does not count.

Given the revelations of the two books, there can be no surprise at pending indictments. My guess is they could be extensive and cover a lot of ground. Seeing John Edwards do time for his cover-up and blatant use of people's funds to save his campaign should not shock any of us. Edwards clearly has an amazing talent for piling sleaze on sleaze. We will all be better when this circus is all over.

What a sad, shameful and disturbing end to what was once a very promising career
