On "Fareed Zakaria GPS", he hosted Harvard Historian Drew Faust who describes the impact that the American Civil War had on this nation from the death of so many of its citizens. Over 600,000 Americans died in the Civil War. In today's terms that would be 7 million Americans.

Just in one day at the Battle of Antietum, over 20,000 died in battle. That is four times the number of Americans killed in all the Iraqi War. Literally, that Battle is the bloodiest day in American history.

The emotional scars must have been deep and long lasting. The horror as news drifted back 'home' must have been overwhelming.
