Only Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) defeat could have brought the LGBT community more joy than the defeat of Congressman Alan West in Florida. The Republican finally conceded the election to Democrat Patrick Murphy. With West's defeat it takes out of Congress one more looney right-wing anti-LGBT person.

Just read the statements that Congressman West has made during his time in Congress and you realize the LGBT community should let out one big collective cheer. (This is a sampling that I have collected from various news sources. My thanks to them all. )

-West verified his comment about not being able to change his race but gay people being able to "change their behavior," then furthered his argument by comparing being gay to liking ice cream or riding scooters

-Rep. Allen West (R-FL), no stranger to controversy, declared on Thursday that gay people are never fired because of their sexual orientation in the United States.

-Congressman West sent "Chick-Fil-A" to the Congressional Black Caucus meeting to support the anti-LGBT company.

-Tea party favorite Rep. Allen West (R-FL) has reportedly fired an intern for retweeting a message critical of comedian Tracy Morgan’s recent homophobic rant.

-West opted to “put it very simple,” stating that the military does not conform to the individual or “a very small special interest group” like the LGBT community. When noting that African-Americans were once barred from military service, West said while he can’t change his skin color, gay servicemembers “can change behavior”

-In addressing the Eagle Forum Collegians 2011 Summit in Washington last June, West suggested that marriage equality would lead to the destruction of society.
