The World War I battles along the Western Front left town after town totally devastated by the raging battles. The first World War took a horrific toll. The dead were piled high in the trenches. The number killed was overwhelming for the countries: A total of ten million soldiers were slaughtered and an appalling seven million civilians lost their lives. The roll call of dead by nation takes your breath away:
United Kingdom: 1.1 million
France: 1.4 million
Germany: 2 million
Austria-Hungary: 1.1 million
The United States lost well over a 115,000 soldiers!
