The stakes are high for the American Catholic Church when they select the new Pope in the next couple of weeks. Literally the future of the Catholic Church in America could be at stake. The results of the latest New York Times/CBS Poll contain grave warnings for the American Bishops. If the next Pope is very conservative in the vain of Pope Benedict XVI or even worse, it might be the best news for the Episcopal Church in years.

The poll showed:

-70% of American Catholics believe the church and its leadership are out of touch.

-70% said Pope Benedict XVI did a poor job of handling the sex abuse outrage.

-75% believed that Pope Benedict XVI should have resigned.

-70% believe Priests should be allowed to marry.

-70% believe that birth control should be allowed

-70% believe that women should be Priests

-62% believe in marriage equality

-46% of American Catholics no longer believe that the Pope is infallible.
