This week the Republican Party announced they are starting new programs for outreach for non-traditional constituencies in the Republican Party. While discussing the overwhelming youth vote for the President, the Republican leaders mentioned that one of the main reasons was the failure to be inclusive to LGBT Americans.

While it is important for those undertaking this new outreach to understand that it isn't how the party is 'branded' but in reality what are its principles and values.

This outreach will be greeted with a great deal of skepticism by many in the LGBT community and given our experience it is understandable.

However it is important to remember that our goal as a community is to cease to be an issue at all. That no one no longer cares if a person is gay or straight. The momentum in the last two years has been short of astounding and now is not the time to be trapped in the past. Every opening presented this community to change hearts and minds should be seized and built upon.

Remember we are a movement for freedom and equality and not a branch of any political party. As a lifelong Democrat, I know where I will be over the next years. As a member of the LGBT community there is no question in my mind we need to the Republican Party to join our epic struggle for freedom so this issue is put to rest forever.

After all, remember it took our Democratic Liberal President three years to evolve on marriage.

So while the Republicans have taken a very small step lets look at their outreach as an important first step and see where it takes us.
