In many ways, it has been absolutely inspiring witnessing the reaction of the LGBT community around the world to the brutal repression of Russian LGBT citizens. From flags flying in Amsterdam, to crosswalks being painted in front of the Russian Embassy in Sweden to massive demonstrations and to the President of the United States repeatedly speaking out against it. Never has the world reacted so quickly and powerfully on an LGBT crisis.
There is much to be done in fighting Putin and his punks. However in the process we must not forget the home front here in America. We have made enormous progress and created great momentum over the last year and we must not lose it.
In fact, we should let the bravery of our brothers and sisters in Russia inspire us to work even harder to complete to the drive for our freedom here in America. One of the best actions we can take to help other LGBT citizens around the world is to provide real evidence how a determine and powerful community can demand full equality and obtain it.
The agenda LGBT citizens in America is still long.
Marriage equality is legal for only about a third of American citizens. It is still legal to fire LGBT citizens in three dozens states. Hate crimes are epidemic around the nation. The extreme right has not let up on its attacks. Sports figures in football, baseball and other sports still do not feel comfortable in coming out. That is just the tip of the iceberg.
There is no question we can fight for our own rights here at home and be powerful fighters for the freedom and safety of LGBT citizens around the world. In fact, we must because if we don't, no one else will step up. However, it requires that we focus so that neither here or aboard will ever again have to live in fear or oppression.
So bring on Illinois, bring on ENDA, bring on Oregon, bring on the Exxon/Mobil's and bring on the extreme right because we have an epic battle to win. In the process, we will help free not only LGBT Americans, our brothers and sisters overseas but also our struggle will liberate those who only have known fear and hate as a way of life
