NBC News has released a new poll this morning showing 50% of Americans are opposed to military action in Syria and a strong 42% favor it. Amazingly, given how Americans view Congress, 80% of Americans want Congressional approval before any action is taken!
The news about the poll comes after the British Parliament last night voted by a thirty plus margin to oppose any military action in Syria. This was a huge set back for the government of Prime Minister David Cameron.
The NBC News poll showed that only 21% think such military action is in our national interest. Interestingly when the military action is just defined as cruise missles from ships, the country favors it by 50% to 44%.
Only 27% believe that in the end any military action will improve the lives of the citizens of Syria. Only 35% approve of the President's handling of the Syrian crisis. Clearly a war weary public and the misadventure in Iraq has taken a toll among public opinion in regards to intervening with force in other countries.
