In Kruger National Park near the Mozambique border sets the Kruger Singita Lodges. The stunning Singita Lebombo and Sweni Lodges are rated the third best hotel in the world. Not just rated for being a safari lodge but the third for all hotels. This rating is not a mistake. The lodges are simply spectacular.
Over the years, I have taken many trips to Africa and to different lodges and countries. These journey's are my passion. Without question, time and time again, I have been blown away by the Singita Lodges. They are as close to perfection as anything you can imagine.
My latest annual African adventure with eleven of my friends was to Sweni. You can take over the entire lodge with just twelve family or friends.
On a winding river sits the Sweni Lodge up among the trees. Only six luxury rooms make up the beautifully and environmentally friendly accommodations. The rooms are sensational with perfectly designed green African decor and a perfect layout for two guests. Each room has two indoor baths and there is an outdoor shower which is everyone's favorite. Massive glass windows invite the outdoors into the room while monkey's frolic in the trees.
The outdoor deck has a double bed which is perfect for catching a nap in the daytime. Even better at night you can sleep outdoors since the brilliant staff will make up the bed with netting, warm blankets, hot water bottles and luxury sheets. It is a special treat.
One night, while I had my turn sleeping outside, two hippos got in a battle in the river right below my deck. The sounds were so chilling that I was convinced that a mass slaughter was taking place. Snuggled in my bed, crutching my hot water bottles and debating if I should go inside, I listen to the struggle for power in the night in the river. The moment was unforgettable!
The game viewing at each location in Africa is always unique. What is special about the viewing at Singita Kruger is that there are large herds of animals. The ranger and trackers assigned to us were amazing. Never does it get tiring to watch the tracker examine the dust and let us know that a leopard had just passed a few moments ago. And then off we go in our open range rover to seek it out with our cameras ready!
What was unique for me this trip was coming upon a journey of Giraffe numbering over forty in one group. In fact every time you turned around on the reserve you would see either journey's of giraffes, dazzles of zebra's or crash of hippos. Interspersed with all that was ample elephants, lions, cape buffalo and leopards! Of course that doesn't even count the dozens of other animals at your beck and call and the most amazing bird sightings.
On our first night a rare huge clear rainbow appeared over the rocky terrain as we were watching a leopard in a tree, elephants to our right, impala behind us and zebra's to our left. The senses were overwhelmed with the beauty of it all. I felt like I had been dropped into Noah's Ark.
Another time there were a crash of at least forty hippos in the river and on the bank, a pride of four lions and again for special effects the ever present impalas, zebras and wildebeest . Everywhere you looked there were animals. The lions were fat with food and sleeping making it safe for the other animals.
Each meal the staff made it special with dinner outdoors with dancing and singing. One of us had a birthday and there was much celebration, dancing, singing and lanterns filling the trees. At the birthday celebration, they made a magnificent coconut cake and carried to the birthday boy with great theatrics!
The management, staff, rangers and trackers were extremely friendly, kind, helpful and professional. Service is a way of life at Sweni.
When God made the earth he really must have done it in eight days and used the eighth day to make the Singita properties.
