Without question 'West Side Story' is one of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time. This week marks the anniversary of its first previews in September, 1957.

The musical was created by legendary geniuses including book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein , lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and choreography by Jerome Robbins. The show ran initially for only 732 performances but was nominated for six Tony Awards. It lost to 'Music Man'.

In 1961, a movie was made of the musical directed by Jerome Robbins. The film starred Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, George Chakris and Russ Tambly. Nominted for eleven Academy Awards it won not only for 'Best Picture' but also nine other awards.
